Hair, Makeup, & Accessories
Recital HAIR
Please arrive to dress rehearsal and recital day with hair already in place. Use generous amounts of hair gel and/or hairspray to make sure your dancer’s hair stays in place and to control “wispies”.
Dance with Me, Creative Movement, Tiny, and Beginning Levels: Hair half up-half down with curls. Click HERE to watch an instructional video.
Level I and up: Hair in a bun (back of head, centered). Choose from one of the instructional videos below:
Classic Ballet Bun Tutorial (recommended for dancers with long/thick hair)
Alternate Ballet Bun Tutorial (recommended for dancers with short/fine hair; this tutorial uses a “bun donut”)
recital accessories
Hair Accessories are located in the costume bag in a smaller plastic bag. At dress rehearsal, we will make sure everyone knows exactly where to place their hair accessory so all dancers look similar.
Typical placement, based on type of hair accessory:
Dancers with half up-half down hair:
scrunchies wrapped around hair tie/rubber band
bows placed on top of the ½ pony (so they can be seen)
Dancers with hair in buns:
scrunchies wrapped around the bun
bows placed just above the bun
flat appliques, decorative hair combs, and pins, pinned to the right side of the head
Hairpiece placement is an important consideration during rehearsals; if changes are made, you will be notified at rehearsal or via email.
Please note: The costume pictures in your parent portal may not reflect how hair should be worn or how accessories should be placed for Bloom’s dance recital. These are stock photos only.
Costume Accessories (items such as gloves, hats, shoe covers, etc.) are typically located in the costume bag, and received with your dancer’s costume. Extras of these items are typically not available, so please take special care to ensure that these accessories are not lost and are kept safely with your dancer’s costume.
RECITAL MAKEUP
Due to stage lights, female students are encouraged to wear makeup, however, it is not required. (Typically, our male students do not wear makeup.)
Makeup recommendations are listed below. Please use your discretion, based on your child’s age, as to which items they need and/or are able to tolerate:
Light foundation, slightly darker than the dancer’s face
Eyebrow stick to fill in eyebrows (to make them more prominent)
Eyeshadow in light/dark browns and neutral shades
Eyeliner (but no large wings, please)
Mascara
Blush
Lipstick: Red performance lipstick is required to ensure all dancers have a cohesive look under the stage lights. Please choose one of the recommended colors:
Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick: “Pioneer” (blue-red)
OR
Revlon Colorstay Matte Lipstick: “Hot Take” (orange-red)
These products can be purchased from Amazon (above links), or any major retailer (Target, CVS, Walmart, etc.).
Please no glitter spray or hair/facial rhinestones
JEWELRY & nail polish
Dancers are allowed to wear small stud earrings only. No other jewelry, including bracelets, necklaces, or rings, is allowed for dress rehearsals or recital performances.
Dancers can only wear natural-colored nail polish. No bright nail polish is allowed during dress rehearsals or during recital performances.
